About SCAI
At SecondsCount.org, we promote healthy hearts, one family at a time. When patients and their families are educated about cardiovascular health, they are better prepared to navigate the medical system and actively participate in their care. SecondsCount.org is a public information website hosted by the Society of Cardiovascular Angiography & Interventions (SCAI) to provide expand awareness of cardiovascular health issues, from prevention to treatment and everything in between. SecondsCount.org is designed for general information purposes only. The information presented on the website is not intended as professional medical services or treatment of any kinds. Its content should not be used for medical advice, diagnosis or treatment. SecondsCount.org should be considered as an informational resource only.
What is SCAI?
SCAI is the primary professional association for interventional cardiologists, physicians who diagnose and treat cardiovascular disease and congenital and structural heart conditions through catheter-based procedures, such as angioplasty and stenting. Members of SCAI are among the world's foremost authorities on cardiovascular disease and its treatment.
Through membership in SCAI, invasive and interventional cardiologists continue to advance patient care through the development of standards and best-practice guidelines and through ongoing professional education and training.
Membership in SCAI includes approximately 4,300 invasive/interventional cardiologists in approximately 70 nations. Highly experienced members who have met performance standards established by SCAI and have garnered excellent peer recommendations can achieve the status of FSCAI, which stands for Fellow of the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography & Interventions, or of MSCAI, which stands for Master Interventionalist of the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography & Interventions.
FSCAI and MSCAI designations provide validation helpful to patients as they choose an interventional cardiologist.
SCAI promote excellence in invasive and interventional cardiovascular medicine through:
- Education of both healthcare providers and patients
- Advocacy for patients' access to quality cardiovascular care
- Development of guidelines
- Advancement of quality and safety standards
SCAI was founded in 1978 under the guidance of Drs. F. Mason Sones and Melvin P. Judkins, pioneering medical scientists whose contributions permitted the development and implementation of invasive cardiology and who foresaw the need for an organization to advance the discipline.
